Personal Film Evaluation Criteria Paper

Flashing back on all the films I had watched over the years I never taken the time to analyze one of them the way that I had learned in Introduction to Film Studies. My principles for evaluating a film’s quality has begin since I started this course I evaluated films totally different than the way I view a film now. Throughout this course I have learned many different styles and techniques to evaluating films. Viewing films goes deeper than the pleasure and enjoyment as a viewer one must be aware of other aspects and different approaches that go with filmmaking such as auteur cult, psychoanalytical, personality, humanistic, genre, political, gender, and eclectic. I will discuss the many techniques and approaches and explaining which ones influences my viewing the most.

Auteur is one approach that seems to influences my viewing the most because unlike being a painting one can tell if a Monet, a Renoir, or a Degas, or if a film director is an auteur. In other words instead of the actors or storyline bringing the moviegoers or audiences to the theater it is the director in auteur films who has this affect. Auteur is a term first coined by François Truffaut to describe the mark of a film director on his films. Directors can be considered an auteur if about five of his film depict certain style that is definitely his The most noted auteur were Frederico Fellini, Satyajit Ray, and Alfred Hitchcock. Therefore, when evaluating a film using the auteur approach we must take a careful look into the directorial style, reflection of the director vision, the director’s strongest impressions, personality, his or her unique creativity in shaping the material.

Another approach which influenced my viewing is the genre film and genre is a fundamental which means we communicate especially in storytelling. Unlike auteur theory approach to films one is focus on the films of one particular director. However, genre approach opens up a much broader range of films from different directors from different backgrounds. For example films of Wes Craven can be compared, direct horror movies, but raised in different eras. Although genre approach is having his or her exceptions clearly stated it also raises the questions whether expectations were filled, and that variations and innovations were present in the films.

In conclusion, as students and film analysis or critics there are many techniques and approaches to analyzing films whether one is using a genre or auteur approach. Each of these approaches comes with questions to fill the needed exceptions of analyzing films. I can definitely say that my criterion for evaluating a film’s quality has changed since the beginning of this course. Now when I am watching a film I will be looking at it them in a new prospected and not just the pleasure and enjoyment of the film .Analyzing films in depth now helps me to have a clear understanding the director’s intended purpose, plot, and plan of film I am not saying that all film will affect me in the same way but I need to always stay opened-minded.
