Cultural consciousness and competency refers to the ability of an person to prorogue judgement and bias toward other people based on their spiritual background. race or ethnicity. sexual orientation or gender. age. and such. and besides one’s capableness of understanding. accepting. and even accommodating to unfamiliar civilization. points of position. beliefs. political orientations. traditions. etc. Raising one’s cultural consciousness and competency requires allocating clip and exercising attempt in larning and understanding the constructs of multiculturalism or cultural diverseness.

For case. developing specific larning ends and a program of action is an first-class start to advancing cultural consciousness. My desire to raise my cultural consciousness of two specific groups. peculiarly homophiles and persons belonging to the black population. require that I set personal acquisition ends and a program of action that will steer how I am traveling to travel about the procedure of larning and understanding civilization based on race. ethnicity. and sexual orientation.

For this peculiar instance. I believe that two of my learning ends should include reexamining the history of the Afro-american people. peculiarly the grounds why they are being discriminated upon. every bit good as the unfamiliar cultural patterns and traditions and the significance and significance that deepens or escalate their civilization. and understanding the personal sentiments and emotions of homophiles in order for me to acknowledge where they are coming from and be able to sympathize with them in the procedure sing their unfortunate state of affairs particularly when it comes to being judged or discriminated because of their sexual orientation.

In order for me to recognize the aforesaid acquisition ends. I plan to carry on research by reading books. magazines. newspaper articles. journal publications. research surveies. on-line articles. and such. about black people and homosexualism. Furthermore. I feel that there is a demand for me to socialise with persons belonging to the Afro-american civilization and homophiles in order for me to obtain first-hand information about their sentiments. experiences. cognition. and such.

I believe that through my willingness and finding to plunge myself into the Afro-american civilization and the universe of homosexualism. I will be able to advance cultural consciousness merely by being witting of the issues that they burden themselves with. EXODUS International is an on-line web site that discriminates against homophiles. It is a religion-based organisation that provides aid for persons who want to “leave homosexualism.

” The organisation subtly reiterates that homosexualism is against the will and the word of God and that “leaving homosexuality” is a manner for persons to populate a better life harmonizing to what God wants for His kids. Furthermore. within the lines of EXODUS International’s mission and aims. the organisation clearly references that homophiles will non be able to populate a fulfilling and holy life. ( EXODUS International. 2005 ) The web log “Stuff White People Like” is an on-line web site that discriminates against African-Americans merely because the site is devoted to discourse issues that generalize on the likes and disfavors of white people.

The website lists more than one 100 things that white people like. I believe generalising and labeling things or state of affairss as something that is true or conformable merely for a certain race is close to bias and prejudice since one is restricting these things and state of affairss to a peculiar race merely despite the fact that other persons from diverse racial backgrounds may portion the likes and disfavors of white people. ( Stuff White Peoples Like. 2009 ) I can candidly state that I am non-judgmental or bias in any manner against any group of people in society depending on their race. ethnicity. faith. age. sexual orientation. gender. and such.

I am besides proud to state that my parents raised me good. Although my household is American and adheres to Christianity as a faith. we do non judge other people from different racial backgrounds and faiths. Because of my parents and household. I was able to understand that people are different from each other. and although we are different. I do non hold the right to judge other people because of it. Furthermore. I understand that people have different frames of head or worldviews and we see things and state of affairss otherwise.

Managing the affair merely requires respect and credence and the apprehension of cultural diverseness or multiculturalism. Judging from my self-assessment of my cultural consciousness and competence. I believe I will be able to continue moral and ethical rules in my profession. particularly with issues that concern multiculturalism. Possibly the lone challenge that I would hold to confront is how I am traveling to develop and increase my cultural consciousness to get by with multicultural tendencies and new information.
